April 18 – The Bats of Michigan with Dr. Allen Kurta. Join’s Michigan’s bat man for a presentation on Michigan’s nine species of bats. Dr. Kurta will focus on the species that overwinter underground in mines and caves.  The presentation will conclude with an introduction to white-nose syndrome, a fungal disease that has killed millions of hibernating bats in eastern North America since 2006. Social hour at 7 p.m., meeting starts promptly at 7:30. In the annex behind Grosse Pointe Unitarian Church.

April 26, May 3, 10, 17, 24 – Bird Walks at the Country Club of Detroit. 6:30-8 a.m. Meet at the stand of trees down the maintenance road to the left of the clubhouse.  Wear waterproof shoes.

May 6 – Grosse Pointe Birding Challenge. All are welcome. Scroll down for more information and rules.

May 17 – Bird walk at Patterson Park, Grosse Pointe Park. Meet in the parking lot at 6:30 p.m.

May 19 – Bird walk at Patterson Park, Grosse Pointe Park. Meet in the parking at 8 a.m.

Winter meeting schedule

Here's Grosse Pointe Audubon's Winter 2016 meeting schedule. Remember, we meet the fourth Monday of January and February to avoid conflicts with federal holidays.

Jan. 25: Lake Invaders: Invasive species and the fight for the future of the Great Lakes. Grosse Pointe Audubon's own Bill Rapai will do a program on invasive species--who they are, how they got here, the damage they are doing, and what we can do about them.

Feb. 22: A Macomb County Big Year.  In 2014, no fewer than TEN Macomb County birders checked off more than 200 species in their home county. Local legend Tom Heatley became the first (and only!) member of the 300 club, and the county big year record was shattered by two birders.  From Blue Grosbeaks to jaegers and other crazy surprises, join Tom Hince on the obsessive quest to break the county big year record.

March 21: To be announced. 

All meetings will be held in the annex behind Grosse Pointe Unitarian Church, 17570 Maumee, Grosse Pointe. Social Hour starts at 7 p.m. and the meeting starts promptly at 7:30. All meetings are free and open to the public.

Here is our meeting schedule for Fall 2015. I will be posing the Fall newsletter as soon as possible.

Sept. 21 — Rounding up: Recent discoveries of new species in Indonesia and China with Dr. Pamela Rasmussen. Only a few new species of birds are named for science worldwide each year, mostly from South America. But Michigan State University Integrative Biologist Pamela Rasmussen has been part of a team that has described 10 new Asian species and rediscovered three others in recent years. Find out more about the process of documentation of biodiversity in this talk.

Oct. 19 — Bringing Conservation to Cities: Lessons from Building the Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge. Most conservationists want to work in pristine areas, and most urban areas are considered too degraded to rank high on conservation priority lists. But John Hartig, director of the Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge, has learned what it takes to foster a conservation ethic in urban areas and to inspire and develop new urban conservationists.

Nov. 16 — Discovering the birds of Newfoundland. Grosse Pointe Audubon’s own Mike and Judy Florian will take you on a photographic journey of their trip to Newfoundland, July 2-8, 2014. The trip included the Avalon Peninsula plus Terra Nova National Park, the easternmost portions of the province of Newfoundland and Labrador.
