Meeting Reminder -- Our October Meeting
Reminder: Our next meeting will be on Monday, October 20.
We hope to see some potential new members who visited our table at the Join or Die event at the War Memorial on October 1. Please note that the correct date is the 20th, not the 15th!
Our program that night will be "The Ivory-billed Woodpecker," presented by Ray Stocking.
This program highlights one of the first great conservation showdowns in the United States: the need to fulfill man's demand for fashion, land, and timber, versus efforts to save the "Lord God Bird," the Ivory-billedWoodpecker. With the twentieth anniversary of the "rediscovery" of the Ivory-billed Woodpecker and the immediate backlash from many experts following the announcement, we will review what has occurred since then, including a massive search by the federal government, independent sightings, and what lies ahead.
Ray Stocking is a former president of the Washtenaw Audubon Society, and former board chair for the Michigan Audubon Board of Directors, and a passionate bird watcher. Ray lives in Ann Arbor.

Tuesday Morning, May 7, 7:00 a.m.: Patterson Park, G.P. Park At the entrance gate, tell the attendant you are part of the Grosse Pointe Audubon group.

Spring 2023 Bird Walk Schedule
We look forward to Grosse Pointe Audubon members joining us on one -- or all! -- of our spring bird walks this year. Here's the schedule:
April 25 — Lochmoor Club, 6:30 a.m.
April 29 — Grosse Pointe Birding Challenge. Scroll up to see instructions.

Annual Meeting set for April 17
Grosse Pointe Audubon will hold its Annual Meeting as part of our April 17 membership meeting. We will be voting on officers and on a revision to our Bylaws. See the April newsletter (to be posted soon) for more information.
As always, we meet in the annenx of the Grosse Pointe Unitarian Church, 17150 Maumee in Grosse Pointe City. The annex is in the back of the parking lot.
Doors open at 7 p.m. for Social Hour. The meeting will start at 7:30 p.m. sharp. All are welcome. This meeting is free and open to the public. We encourage you to be vaccinated. Masks are optional. It's a small room, so...

Rules for the 2023 Grosse Pointe Birding Challenge
Join us on Saturday, April 29, for the 16th annual Grosse Pointe Birding Challenge. Teams from each of the five Grosse Pointes will be spreading out across their communities to count as many bird species as possible. The team that gets the most points at the end of the competition wins!
Here are the rules:
1. The competition starts anytime after midnight.
2. You are not restricted to the city you live in, but there is only one team per community. Just let Challenge Commissioner Mark O'Keefe know which city you plan to bird in advance. If you decide to become the Shores team, you will be able to bird the Ford House.
3. We're on the honor system. Nevertheless, claims of extremely rare birds will likely be challenged by the other competitors. You may be asked to provide proof.
4. Each team will receive one point for every species it sees. Any team that finds a list-buster -- a species not previously recorded on the Challenge checklist -- will receive five points for that bird.
5. Meet at Panera Bread in the Village in Grosse Pointe at noon sharp to tabulate.
6. Be on time for the tabulation. One point will be deducted for each minute you are late.
7. All decisions of the Commissioner of the Grosse Pointe Birding Challenge are final and are not reviewable by a court of law or a congressional committee.
Non-Grosse Pointe residents are welcome. Contact Grosse Pointe Audubon president Bill Rapai at BRapai(at)aol.com for more information.

Feb. 25 Eagle field trip is canceled
Bad news...
Due to the unusually warm weather there's no ice on Lake Saint Clair. Due to there being no ice on Lake Saint Clair, there are no eagles for our Feb. 25 field trip. Therefore, the trip has been canceled.
